After having a thrombosis (with my weight as one of the causes), I took it as a sign from my body that it was time to change.
As I was tired of the yo-yo effect, of overeating and then feeling guilty, and of being obsessed with weighing myself almost every day, I sought help from a professional, Dr. Ana Rita.
She helped me see food and my weight differently. She showed me that food can be our ally in losing weight, always together with other factors (water, exercise, etc.). I started with small changes:
- Water: I start with a glass of water when I wake up. When I get to work I drink 1 or 2 more and a tea. I always carry a water bottle (700 ml), which I try to finish before lunch, and another one after lunch. Before bed, another tea.
- I watch the portions on my plate, and vegetables are always there.
- I pay more attention to labels (products low in sugar and fat).
- I eat 2 pieces of fruit a day.
- I cut down on alcohol (it is saved for special occasions or social events).
- If I feel like something sweet, I have it right after a meal.
- I always have vegetables in the freezer, wholegrain bread, oats and more nutritious cereals, yoghurts, milk and low-fat cheese.
- I do 2 hours of group exercise a week (it is more fun) and 1 hour at home.
- I walk more: if I drive to the shops, I park far from the entrance, and I always take the stairs, even to the 4th floor.
With these changes I no longer feel the need to eat a whole bag of crisps or a whole bar of chocolate. I can have a small piece, just for pleasure.
I feel more energetic, lighter, happier. And I am not on a diet, I am relearning how to eat and be healthy.
